Ampthill women's rugby team working to feel less 'segregated' within clubWomen's rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK. 40, 000 women and girls were registered as players across 400 clubs as of April this year. The Rugby Football Union (RFU) is reporting a huge 17 per cent year-on-year growth in participation in the women’s game. However, one major obstacle in the way of the women's game, particularly at grass roots level, is the lack of changing facilities for female players. One Bedfordshire rugby club is now looking to create facilities specially dedicated to their expanding women's teams. Over the summer, Ampthill and District Community Rugby Club ran “ROAR – Introduction to Rugby Camp for Girls”, free sessions which were supported by coaches and elite players and the camp attracted over 100 girls to attend, further adding to their female playing cohort ahead of the new season across all age groups.
It is that value that has made Ampthill Rugby Club a place where like minded people can meet teammates, make friends and truly become a part of the community. " In order to be able to provide the club's female teams with suitable changing and showering facilities, Ampthill Rugby Club sought out the support of the local community to help raise the money required. Central Bedfordshire Council is covering 60 per cent of the costs through the s106 Local Authority Grant Scheme, which the club successfully applied for in February 2022. They are aiming to complete the project, which would involve the reconfiguration of the current tractor shed to incorporate the ladies' and girls' changing rooms and showers in addition to offices and a gym, before the end of 2022.
Current changing facilities at the club are shared by all teams (Image: Ampthill and District Community Rugby Club) Maddie continued: "With female rugby and the sport in general going from strength to strength, we too as a club must grow with it. That's why it's so fantastic to see our community coming together to help raise funds for the new ARUFC Lionesses changing facilities.

The Maroon and Gold have successfully raised £20, 000 in less than a month, and have also been recognised by Sport England and have secured £6, 000 from the Places and Spaces fund, which aims to create a legacy from the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Club chairman, Alex Radley, has thanked contributors in a statement on the club's website. The latest statement said: "We’re delighted to announce that our crowdfunder to build Ladies & Girls Changing Facilities at Ampthill & District Community Rugby Club has been recognised by Sport England. " "This recognition would not have been possible without the members and supporters of the club who have already contributed towards the crowdfunder – I’d like to send a heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you! Maddie Moore, 21, player coach for Ampthill Lionesses said: "Since I first stepped foot into Ampthill Rugby Club, watching my older brother play, it was instilled in me that rugby is based on one major thing, community.
